FERMI@Elettra is a research project for the construction near ELETTRA (Trieste, Italy) of a single-pass FEL user-facility for the VUV spectral region. After finalizing the conceptual design in 2006, the technical design is now in progress. An updated general layout of the machine is sketched and its vacuum system is outlined. Because vacuum chambers are subject to many mechanical and electromagnetic constraints, different vacuum sections require different materials, material finishing and vacuum levels (from 10-10 up to 10-1 mbar pressure range). Open issues and solutions concerning these particular aspects are discussed mainly for the gun section and the undulator region. They are outlined for other machine sections. Vacuum calculations and simulations of relevant machine parts are reported.
