Ferroelectric liquid crystals are wildly applicable in various electro-optical devices particularly in displays due to their fast response time. But most of the liquid crystal displays are colour less and having less contrast ratio and viewing angle. To produce contrast and to increase the viewing angle basically two moods have been studied birefringence mode and guest host mode. Due to some basic drawbacks guest host mode have predominance over birefringence mode. The presence of dye molecule in the ferroelectric liquid crystal matrix results the redistribution of intermolecular interaction energy and inter molecular arrangement. Hence all of its molecular properties changes and produces huge effect on it various properties. In present paper we report the dielectric and electro-optical study of planar aligned pure ferroelectric liquid crystal and its five mixtures with anthraquinone dye. The mixtures were prepared by the dispersion of anthraquinone dye in the concentration of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%. After the addition of dye in pure ferroelectric liquid crystal, huge change has been observed in the various properties like relaxation phenomenon, spontaneous polarization, response time, and dielectric strength etc. The relaxation phenomenon in SmC* phase have been discussed by using Cole-Cole plots.
